Dog Bite Injury Compensation Claim Solicitors

Law Society Accredited Personal Injury Solicitors

For victims of a serious dog attack, a Dog Bite Compensation Claim can help rebalance the physical, psychological and financial losses you have suffered as a result.

Being bitten or attacked by a dog can be a terrifying experience, causing significant physical injury and lasting psychological damage. In many cases, it can leave the victim with a residual fear of being around dogs.

Under current legislation, dog owners are obliged to ensure their dogs do not injure people, so if you or a loved one have been attacked by a dog you may be able to make a Dog Bite Compensation Claim to recompense you for the pain and anguish you have suffered.

Sadly, with the growing number of people owning certain breeds of dogs as status symbols, victims of dog attacks are increasingly requiring surgery.  NHS figures suggest that the number has increased by nearly 50% in the last decade.

At PSR Solicitors, we aim to ensure that if you have suffered an attack or bite from a dog, you are appropriately compensated for the pain you have suffered and the mental anguish you have endured. Whilst we are unable to reverse the psychological effects of a dog attack, we can use our extensive experience of dealing with Dog Bite Compensation Claims to help build the strongest possible case and secure the financial compensation you deserve.

Contact us today and one of our specialist personal injury lawyers will assess your case and if we feel you have a viable Dog Bite Claim, we will help get you the maximum compensation your injury warrants.

Pursuing compensation for your personal injury is not something you have to do on your own, you need specialist advice.

Trust us to help you.

Dog Bite Compensation Claims.

These accidents involve all types of dogs, not just the “Devil Dogs” portrayed in the press. More so than with other types of personal injury, dog attacks can be traumatic events that can affect people mentally as well as physically.

Some dogs are well known to be vicious and are often used by their owners to terrorise other people or to act as burglar deterrents and as such they may deliberately be set upon people.

Sometimes however pets can escape and when approached by a member of the public they can react out of fear more than anything else. Such Dog Bite Claims are not straightforward and often we need to show that the individual dog, rather than the breed itself, has a history of attacking people. All attacks must be reported to the police.

Claims can be pursued against the owners of the animal, usually private homeowners or farmers, or via the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.

Our expert solicitors deal with all types of Dog Bite Claims.

If you wish to pursue a Dog  Bite Compensation Claim and you want free advice from a fully qualified solicitor then please contact us now.

Using one of our specialist No Win No Fee Solicitors ensures that you have a better chance of winning your claim and receiving all of the compensation and help that you are entitled to all on a No Win No Fee basis.

This means that you won't have any legal costs to pay if your claim is unsuccessful so No Win No Fee = No Risk To You.

Am I Eligable To Make A Dog Bite Injury Compensation Claim?

If you are considering making a dog bite injury compensation claim, it is essential that you contact us as soon as possible. There are legal time constraints on any claim, allowing you 3 years from the date of the incident in which to start your claim. There is an exception to this legal timeframe, where if the victim was under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, they have up to the date of their 21st birthday to make a claim.

A parent or legal guardian is also able to make a claim on their behalf at the time of the incident. Sadly, it is not that uncommon for parents to have to make a dog bite injury claim on behalf of a child as children are more at risk of being attacked by dogs, with the under 5 age group accounting for the largest number of dog injury victims.

If you or one of your children have been injured by an unprovoked dog attack, speak to PSR Solicitors today.  We can assess the potential eligibility of your claim and can answer any questions you may have. With our years of experience of dealing with Dog Bite Compensation Claims, we know that these incidents can sometimes involve the pet dog of someone you know.

We appreciate that the decision to pursue a compensation claim can often be a difficult one but rest assured, we will deal with any enquiry with the utmost sensitivity, complete confidentiality and we will never try and encourage you to pursue a claim you are not comfortable with.

What Can I Claim Dog Bite Compensation For?

If you, or someone you know, has been bitten by a dog, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim to recompense you for the pain and suffering you’ve endured. If you required medical treatment or were forced to take time off work to allow recovery, you could be entitled to claim for any financial losses you have suffered.

Each dog bite incident is unique and as such, every claim will result in unique levels of compensation. The amount you are able to claim will depend on the details of the incident, the severity and nature of your physical and psychological injuries and the degree of pain and suffering you’ve endured.

To discuss the details of your claim and for a personalised estimate of the compensation you could be awarded, contact one of PSR Solicitors’ specialist Dog Bite Solicitors today.

Common Injuries Caused By Dog Bites Or Attacks

Dog attacks can often be frenzied, leaving the victim with a variety of different injuries. The most common injuries sustained during a dog attack include:

Depending on the breed and the severity of the attack, dog bites can result in anything from bruising to deep lacerations requiring stitches or surgery. In the event that the bite pierces the skin, it is essential that the victim gets a tetanus shot. Tetanus can be extremely serious if medical intervention is not received in good time.

In some cases where the dog attack becomes frenzied, the dog not only bites the victim but uses it’s strength and body mass to tear the victim’s skin and flesh, resulting in horrific injuries to soft parts of the body like the face. This type of injury can result in the victim requiring significant plastic surgery to repair the damage.

The injuries from biting and tearing can sometimes leave the victim with permanent scarring. In instances where the injury is visible, it might leave the victim requiring plastic surgery and can also cause significant psychological issues, affecting the victim’s self-esteem and self-confidence.

These types of injuries can occur in two ways. Firstly, as a result of the struggle or panic, where the victim injures a bone whilst trying to evade the dog.  And secondly, due to the pressure of the actual dog bite. The average human bite applies a force of around 120-140 pounds per square inch (PSI), the average dog bite is recorded at around 230-250 PSI but alarmingly, some of the banned breeds of dog, such as the Dogo Argentine, have a bite pressure exceeding 500PSI, which is easily enough to cause damage to some bones in the body.

A dog attack can be terrifying, causing not only physical injury but also significant psychological trauma. Understandably, a dog attack can often leave the victim feeling anxious and fearful around other dogs, and in more extreme cases, has been known to cause serious psychological conditions such as PTSD.

As all too frequently seen in the media, young children and even babies are sometimes the victims of dog attacks and occasionally the attack is such that it causes injuries so severe that the child does not survive. Fortunately, this is extremely rare but not rare enough. In other instances, serious dog attacks can result in the victim sustaining such serious injuries that they cannot be surgically repaired, and the victim has to undergo an operation to amputate.

What To Do If You Have Suffered A Dog Bite

If you have been bitten or attacked by a dog your primary concern should always be for your own safety and personal well-being, so we would always suggest seeking medical treatment following any dog bite, however minor your injury seems. The more serious your injury, the more urgently you should seek medical attention. Under no circumstances delay urgent medical attention to gather information for your claim, your health is always of paramount importance.

If your injury is such that you don’t require immediate medical attention, below is a list of steps you should take to ensure your own safety, whilst maximising your chances of making a successful claim.

  • Locate the owner of the dog and take their name, address, and telephone number
  • Take insurance details. Many dog owners have pet insurance, if this is the case, take the details from the dog owner. If the incident occurred at someone's home or on private or public land, you will require the owner's insurance details. In all situations, you will need details of the insurance company, as well as their policy number, if available.
  • Gather the details of any witnesses willing to make a statement
  • Ensure you make a written account of what happened with as much detail as possible
  • Call the police and record the crime reference number. This will make sure that steps are taken to ensure the dog won’t attack someone else in the future. They can also assist in taking details from witnesses, as well as the dog owner.
  • Seek medical attention for your injuries. If your injuries require it, this should be your number one priority.
  • Ensure you have photographic evidence of your injuries and of the location where the incident occurred. It is not unheard of for dog owners to retrospectively put up warning signs to try and claim you were adequately warned.
  • Make detailed records of injury-related expenses and keep all relevant receipts, including travel costs and medical costs.

The law relating to Dog Bite and Dog Attack Compensation Claims is complex and requires highly specialised legal knowledge. PSR Solicitors’ specialist personal injury solicitors have years of experience of successfully settling claims in this niche legal area and have an enviable record of securing compensation for victims of dog bites and dog attacks, so call us now to begin your Dog Bite Injury Claim.
