According to Zoopla estimates, the average price paid for a property in Ruthin is £200,443 (Mar 2021) which represents a 7.31% increase over the last 12 months.
The most commonly purchased property type was detached houses, accounting for nearly 40% of all property sales in the area. The current average value of detached properties in and around Ruthin is £407,260.
Terraced properties were the next most popular type of property sale, accounting for just over 30% of all sales, with an average value of £196,684.
Semi-detached houses are generally priced between £250,000 and £350,000 and flats range in price from below £100,000 for a 2 bed flat, to in excess of £300,000 for a 3 bedroom luxury apartment.

There are a number of excellent schools serving the children of Ruthin.
Rhos Street C.P. School provides education to nursery, infant and primary school-aged boys, and girls. The school received an ‘Excellent’ rating, the highest possible Estyn rating, in their most recent Estyn (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales) Inspection.
Ysgol Pen Barras is another primary school to receive an ‘Excellent’ rating from Estyn. The school provides education to approximately 270 pupils between the ages of three and eleven.
Ruthin is also home to Ruthin School, considered one of the best independent schools in Wales. Ruthin School is a co-educational boarding and day school catering for pupils from the age of 10 to 20 years. They also achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating in their most recent Estyn inspection.
Located in the Vale of Clwyd and bordered by the Clwydian hills, Ruthin is not the most easily accessible location unless you have access to a car.
The nearest railway station is approximately 20 miles to the north in Rhyl or 23 miles to the east in Chester, both of which are accessible by bus.
Fortunately, there are a number of bus routes that allow those without a car to travel around the region, offering access to places such as Chester, Rhyl, Wrexham, Denbigh, Mold, St. Asaph, Corwen, as well as a number of smaller villages in between.
The roads offer the best way to get around, with the A55 approximately 25 minutes away. The A55 offers access to Chester, a route to the northern coast of Wales and connections to the M53, allowing access to the M6, via the M56.
Ruthin is home to a number of stylish independent shops, including State of Distress on St Peter’s Square, which has some lovely modern ceramics, jewellery and upcycled homewares, and Ishio which is packed full of stunning Swinging ‘60s interior design pieces, crockery and toys.
As well as having nine places to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, one of which boasts over 15 varieties of scone, there is also a varied selection of places to eat. Two popular eateries are On The Hill and Small Plates, which offer everything from cod bon-bons to complementary carrot and coriander houmous.
Other popular restaurants include the Grade II-listed Georgian Manorhaus, an unlikely and rather splendid boutique hotel, with a fantastic restaurant and cool bar, and the Myddelton Grill on the Square, known locally as Seven Eyes due to its seven roof windows which offer fabulous views over the town.
Largely rebuilt in red sandstone in the 19th century, Ruthin’s medieval castle was transformed into a luxury hotel and spa retreat in 1963. Offering a range of spa days, both guests and non-residents can experience a selection of treatments, as well as enjoy the use of the thermal suite and gym. There are also a number of restaurants in the hotel, popular with both residents of the hotel and locals.
A great way to find out about Ruthin’s history, whilst also enjoying a good walk, is by partaking in the brilliant Ruthin Art Trail. Starting just outside Ruthin Craft Centre, you’re guided to explore ten spy holes set into Ruthin’s town walls, within which you’ll discover details of Welsh folklore and history. Another Twenty-two figures are concealed in shopfronts and roofs too. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and there are photo opportunities aplenty.
Up on Castle Street, the Grade 1-listed house Nantclwyd Y Dre is a fantastic local museum, taking its visitors on a journey through the lives and fashions of the house’s many residents. Initially built in 1435, the house has been added to, updated, and upgraded throughout the centuries, culminating in what we see today.
Designed by architects Sergison Bates, Ruthin Craft Centre shows the best in national and international contemporary applied arts. With three galleries, six artist studios, a retail gallery, and a popular cafe with a courtyard terrace, Ruthin Arts Centre is a popular place to spend an afternoon and is a social hub for the town.
With stunning scenery all around, there is no shortage of places for locals to enjoy a good walk, whilst taking in the breath-taking views.
For those who seek more extreme exercise or even more dramatic views, Snowdonia National Park is just a40 minute drive down the road, where you can enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities, including scaling Wales’ highest peak, Mount Snowdon.
