The Oswestry Property Market

With its porticoed coaching inns, red-brick Georgian townhouses, award-winning bookshop and black-and-white half-timbered cottages, Oswestry is a charming market town located in the English county of Shropshire, approximately 5 miles from the Welsh border.

As one of Shropshire most popular towns, Oswestry enjoys an impressive selection of affordable homes, some great schools and relatively close proximity to towns such as Shrewsbury, Wrexham, and Chester, making it an ideal location for first-time buyers and families.

With a diverse range of residential property, including cottages and Georgian townhouses in the centre, Victorian & Edwardian semis and townhouses in the suburbs and a number of new build developments on the edge of town, the choice of properties is excellent. There are also a number of commercial properties available both in the town centre and on the outskirts.

Gobowen station has hourly trains to Wrexham (18 mins), Chester (40 mins) and Shrewsbury (18 mins), as well as daily trains to Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham International.

Oswestry is also blessed with more than its fair share of pubs for a town of its size, with the Bailey Head and The Oak Inn proving ever popular.

Leisure and Culture

There is no shortage of things to do and places to see in and around Oswestry.

Located on the northern perimeter of Oswestry, Old Oswestry Hillfort is one of Britain’s best preserved Iron Age hill-forts. Built and occupied during the Iron Age (800 BC to AD 43) Old Oswestry Hillfort is hailed for the exceptional condition of its multiple ramparts and offers stunning panoramic views over Shropshire, North and Mid Wales and Cheshire.

Initially raised in Norman times, Whittington Castle was rebuilt in the 13th century with stone towers, a barbican, and a moat. Located just 3 miles outside Oswestry, the Marches Castle was restored in the 2000s through a local fundraising effort and offers re-enactment battles on the first weekend in May, a living history weekend in late July and over 12 acres of rambling parkland to explore.

Another great way to spend a day is to take a visit to the British Ironwork Centre, a 90-acre site boasting an impressive forge, local silversmiths, and an outdoor sculpture park with over 100 metal exhibits, including the impressive Knife Angel, composed of over 100,000 blades.

There are many other local attractions, including the Cambrian Railways Museum, Oswestry Town Museum and Cae Glas Park, a stunning park with formal flower beds, crazy golf, a bowling green, tennis courts and a play area for young children.

Nature and the Great Outdoors

Oswestry is surrounded by beautiful countryside and offers the keen rambler or wildlife enthusiast countless opportunities to get out and about.

Another option is the hugely popular Park Hall Countryside Experience. This award-winning attraction allows children to interact with a vast array of animals, including everything from cow milking demonstrations and pig racing to grooming ponies and seasonal feeding of lambs. The Park Hall Countryside Experience is so much more than just an open farm, it also has an educational value too, with four museum areas that recreate a Victorian schoolroom, an Iron Age roundhouse, and trenches from the First and Second World Wars.
