BURN INJURY
If you have suffered a burn injury in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may be able to claim compensation. Talk to our Burn Injury Lawyers today for free initial advice.
At PSR Solicitors, we strive to ensure you receive the maximum settlement for your burn injury claim.
Burn injuries are commonly caused by fire, steam, electricity and chemicals with over 15,000 patients being treated by the NHS per year. According to data from the Labour Force Survey, 23,000 workers suffered a non-fatal burn injury at work during the three year period analysed, with mishandling of chemicals a leading cause.
Burn injuries cause significant pain and suffering, but there is often a psychological impact too.
In addition, a serious burn injury may prevent you from working for a period of time leading to a loss of income, which can add further strain to your situation. If the burn injury is severe, it is likely that there will be scarring and cosmetic surgery, including skin grafts, may be required.
Our Burn Injury Lawyers can help you with everything, from claiming for your injury and your losses, such as loss of earnings and travel expenses, to arranging private medical treatment and rehabilitation to assist in your recovery and get your life back on track. Pursuing compensation for a burn injury is not something you have to do on your own, you need specialist advice. Trust us to help you.

Burns are a horrible type of injury to suffer from. We all have a primordial fear of flames and often, unfortunately, psychological problems can accompany physical injury and scarring following an accident involving serious burn injuries.
Minor burns or scalds clear up within a number of months although sometimes over-sensitivity in that area may be permanent. Other burns of a more serious nature, such as chemical burns, can leave permanent visible scarring and may significantly affect a person’s confidence.
Burn injuries are common accidents at work in situations where employees regularly handle hot substances, chemicals, or are in close proximity to machinery that heats up. Road traffic accidents are also a common cause of severe burns.
We understand the distress and worry that you might be experiencing as a result of your burn injuries and we are here to help by providing the highest standards of legal support and access to leading treatments and therapies.
We are here to help you redress the damage that has been done and although no amount of money can make up for what has happened, we are committed to securing the maximum compensation available to support both your physical and emotional recovery.
A financial settlement can’t take away the pain or suffering you have been through but it is there to recognise the harm that has been done and to cover any costs and losses comfortably.
A burn injury compensation award is there to provide you with:
The amount of compensation you are likely to receive will depend on the extent of your injuries and the impact on your day-to-day life, livelihood, and well-being. The largest sums are likely to be agreed for burns that have resulted in permanent scarring or disfigurement, particularly on the face, or injuries that are so severe that they have affected tendons, muscles, and bones, potentially limiting long-term mobility in the affected areas.
For more information about the range of compensation pay outs applied to different types of burn injuries, see our skin injury compensation calculator page.
There are four main types of burns.
This is the least severe category of burn injury. The epidermis is damaged and appears red and swollen, but it is not blistered. It is painful, but there is unlikely to be any lasting damage.
A superficial dermal burn is slightly more serious. Both the epidermis and dermis are likely to be affected. The skin will appear pink and painful. Blisters will probably form around the affected area.
This is when the epidermis and dermis are both damaged. The skin usually turns red and blotchy. People respond differently to this type of burn. For some, the skin becomes dry; for others, it becomes moist. Most victims will experience some swelling and blistering, but not all will experience pain. A full thickness burn This is the most severe type of burn. It occurs when all three layers of skin - the epidermis, dermis and subcutis - are damaged. The skin is usually burnt away, and the tissues underneath appear pale or blackened.
Your questions answered
Your employer is bound by law to protect you against accident or injury at work as detailed in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Legislation is clear about your employer’s responsibilities to provide:
If your employer has not met their responsibilities and you suffer burns whilst carrying out your job, then you may be able to pursue a claim against them. We will help to ascertain any fault or negligence on their part and will build an effective case against them if they are found to be in breach of the law.
If you have been injured at work, the incident should be recorded in your company’s accident log as soon as possible and you should seek immediate medical treatment.
Many people worry about losing their jobs as a result of making a personal injury claim against their employer but the law is on the side and you are fully protected. It is illegal for your employer to make you redundant, harass you or create a hostile environment that makes you want to leave your job.
We can advise you on these matters to put your mind at ease and will support you at all stages.
In order to pursue a compensation claim for a serious burn injury, we will need to know the details of the incident, who you believe to be at fault and whether there were any witnesses. It is important that we understand exactly how your injuries affect your life, whether they are short-term or more permanent.
We will then be able to discuss how likely it is that your claim will be successful, how much you are likely to receive and the next steps to take.

Burn injuries can be particularly painful and upsetting, especially in instances where they have led to permanent disfigurement or scarring.
The most common causes of serious burn injuries include:
Depending on the extent and severity of the burns sustained, your injuries will fall into one of four categories:
First degree burns are the mildest form of burn injury affecting only the first layer, or epidermis, of the skin. They are sometimes referred to as superficial burns and although they don’t usually require any medical treatment, if a large area of skin is affected they can be painful and may need to be seen by a doctor.
Burns Second-degree burns penetrate both the first and second layers of the skin, or the epidermis and dermis. Because the damage extends beyond the top or superficial layer of skin they are considered to be more serious than a first-degree burn and can cause pigment changes to the skin. In some of the most severe cases, a skin graft may be required.
Third degree burns cause extensive damage throughout all the layers of the skin, causing nerve damage and other complications. Surgery will be required in all cases of third-degree burns to try and avoid extensive scarring and contracture or tightening of the skin.
Fourth degree burns are so severe that they also affect the muscles, tendons or bones resulting in life-changing injuries.
