BURN INJURY

Burn Injury Compensation Claim Solicitors

Law Society Accredited - Practice Management Standard
Law Society Accredited Personal Injury Solicitors

If you have suffered a burn injury in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may be able to claim compensation. Talk to our Burn Injury Lawyers today for free initial advice.

At PSR Solicitors, we strive to ensure you receive the maximum settlement for your burn injury claim.

Burn injuries are commonly caused by fire, steam, electricity and chemicals with over 15,000 patients being treated by the NHS per year. According to data from the Labour Force Survey, 23,000 workers suffered a non-fatal burn injury at work during the three year period analysed, with mishandling of chemicals a leading cause.

Burn injuries cause significant pain and suffering, but there is often a psychological impact too.

In addition, a serious burn injury may prevent you from working for a period of time leading to a loss of income, which can add further strain to your situation.  If the burn injury is severe, it is likely that there will be scarring and cosmetic surgery, including skin grafts, may be required.

Our Burn Injury Lawyers can help you with everything, from claiming for your injury and your losses, such as loss of earnings and travel expenses, to arranging private medical treatment and rehabilitation to assist in your recovery and get your life back on track. Pursuing compensation for a burn injury is not something you have to do on your own, you need specialist advice. Trust us to help you.

For free advice from a professional serious injury claims solicitor please call freephone 0800 020 9167 or use the contact form on this page to make an online enquiry.

About Burn Injury Compensation Claims

Burns are a horrible type of injury to suffer from. We all have a primordial fear of flames and often, unfortunately, psychological problems can accompany physical injury and scarring following an accident involving serious burn injuries.

Minor burns or scalds clear up within a number of months although sometimes over-sensitivity in that area may be permanent. Other burns of a more serious nature, such as chemical burns, can leave permanent visible scarring and may significantly affect a person’s confidence.

Burn injuries are common accidents at work in situations where employees regularly handle hot substances, chemicals, or are in close proximity to machinery that heats up. Road traffic accidents are also a common cause of severe burns.

We understand the distress and worry that you might be experiencing as a result of your burn injuries and we are here to help by providing the highest standards of legal support and access to leading treatments and therapies.

We are here to help you redress the damage that has been done and although no amount of money can make up for what has happened, we are committed to securing the maximum compensation available to support both your physical and emotional recovery.

A financial settlement can’t take away the pain or suffering you have been through but it is there to recognise the harm that has been done and to cover any costs and losses comfortably.

A burn injury compensation award is there to provide you with:

  • Immediate medical treatment Long-term medical care for severe and long-lasting injuries
  • Cosmetic surgery to repair scar tissues
  • Protection against loss of earnings
  • Recompense for any out of pocket expenses

The amount of compensation you are likely to receive will depend on the extent of your injuries and the impact on your day-to-day life, livelihood, and well-being. The largest sums are likely to be agreed for burns that have resulted in permanent scarring or disfigurement, particularly on the face, or injuries that are so severe that they have affected tendons, muscles, and bones, potentially limiting long-term mobility in the affected areas.

For more information about the range of compensation pay outs applied to different types of burn injuries, see our skin injury compensation calculator page.

Burn Injury Types

There are four main types of burns.

Superficial Epidermal Burn

This is the least severe category of burn injury. The epidermis is damaged and appears red and swollen, but it is not blistered. It is painful, but there is unlikely to be any lasting damage.

Superficial Burns

A superficial dermal burn is slightly more serious. Both the epidermis and dermis are likely to be affected. The skin will appear pink and painful. Blisters will probably form around the affected area.

Deep Dermal or Partial Thickness Burns

This is when the epidermis and dermis are both damaged. The skin usually turns red and blotchy. People respond differently to this type of burn. For some, the skin becomes dry; for others, it becomes moist. Most victims will experience some swelling and blistering, but not all will experience pain. A full thickness burn This is the most severe type of burn. It occurs when all three layers of skin - the epidermis, dermis and subcutis - are damaged. The skin is usually burnt away, and the tissues underneath appear pale or blackened.

Your questions answered

Your employer is bound by law to protect you against accident or injury at work as detailed in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Legislation is clear about your employer’s responsibilities to provide:

  • A safe working environment.
  • Safe equipment.
  • Thorough risk assessments and steps to limit or control any risks found.
  • Adequate training and supervision, especially with regard to handling hazardous equipment or substances.
  • Suitable protective clothing.
  • Information about potential hazards in the workplace including chemical substances, equipment or activity.
  • Competent co-workers who won’t endanger you or others.

If your employer has not met their responsibilities and you suffer burns whilst carrying out your job, then you may be able to pursue a claim against them. We will help to ascertain any fault or negligence on their part and will build an effective case against them if they are found to be in breach of the law.

If you have been injured at work, the incident should be recorded in your company’s accident log as soon as possible and you should seek immediate medical treatment.

Many people worry about losing their jobs as a result of making a personal injury claim against their employer but the law is on the side and you are fully protected. It is illegal for your employer to make you redundant, harass you or create a hostile environment that makes you want to leave your job.

We can advise you on these matters to put your mind at ease and will support you at all stages.

In order to pursue a compensation claim for a serious burn injury, we will need to know the details of the incident, who you believe to be at fault and whether there were any witnesses. It is important that we understand exactly how your injuries affect your life, whether they are short-term or more permanent.

We will then be able to discuss how likely it is that your claim will be successful, how much you are likely to receive and the next steps to take.

So if you have suffered a burn injury in an accident and you want free advice on claiming compensation from a fully qualified personal injury solicitor then please contact us now.

Using one of our specialist solicitors ensures that you have a better chance of winning your claim and receiving all of the compensation and help that you are entitled to all on a No Win No Fee basis. This means that you won't have any legal costs to pay if your claim is unsuccessful so No Win No Fee = No Risk To You.

Some legal firms don’t use qualified solicitors to deal with burn injury accident claims anymore, at PSR Solicitors however we believe that your case deserves special attention from a dedicated solicitor.

Paul Rossiter

Managing Director

I am the Managing Director of PSR Solicitors. After working in various law firms, both small high street firms and a larger practice in Manchester, I saw a gap in the market for a high quality practice that had the same core high street values of being personable and approachable and combining them with the efficiency and professionalism of a larger practice.  PSR Solicitors was therefore established in 2009 in Shotton, Deeside with this aim. Since then PSR Solicitors has provided high quality legal services to local clients throughout North Wales and Cheshire.

I live in Chester with my young family and 2 dogs and enjoy regular holidays along the coast of North Wales.

I have recently been asked to join the board of trustees at Platform For Life, a mental health counselling charity in Chester. Good mental health is the foundation of a more fulfilled, happy and healthy life, yet many families struggle to access the help and support they need to achieve it. Platform for Life offers free local counselling and play therapy for families who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Mark House

Solicitor - Head of Litigation

I completed my law degree and legal practice course at Nottingham Law School, before qualifying as a solicitor in 2004. I then worked at a specialist personal injury firm in the East Midlands and a leading regional firm, before joining PSR in 2017.

With PSR I've continued to specialise in acting for Personal Injury claimants and have developed a keen understanding of the procedures and tactics involved in pursuing a claim, as well as the difficulties and concerns faced by people who have suffered as the result of an accident.

Since 2014 I've been proud to help hundreds of people. I've represented the public in all manner of injury claims, including serious orthopaedic injuries, brain damage, and psychological trauma. I was instructed to deal with claims for clients in the aftermath of the Potters Bar rail crash and the Penhallow hotel fire.

In addition, I represent clients in relation to all manner of disputes. I have dealt with professional negligence claims, such as those against solicitors and builders. I have helped clients recover money which is due to them and to dispute invoices which have been sent to them. I have helped business defend claims against them. I have tackled neighbour and boundary disputes.

I live locally to the Colwyn Bay office, and outside of work, I enjoy taking advantage of the coastal and mountain outdoor activities which are available on the doorstep. I'm also heavily involved with an outdoor pursuits charity, which I find an enjoyable and rewarding way of using my free time.

Serious Burn Injuries

Burn injuries can be particularly painful and upsetting, especially in instances where they have led to permanent disfigurement or scarring.

The most common causes of serious burn injuries include:

  • Road traffic accidents: Burn injuries in a road traffic accident are usually caused by a fire in the vehicle. Unfortunately, vehicle fires are the cause of some of the most serious burn injuries.
  • Accidents at work: Often the result of faulty equipment, inappropriate protective clothing, incorrect training, exposed electrical wires or improper insulation of electrical equipment.
  • Household accidents: Risks include scalding water from taps or kettles, faulty electrical devices, domestic appliances such as irons and ovens as well as cleaning and other household products.

Depending on the extent and severity of the burns sustained, your injuries will fall into one of four categories:

First Degree Burns

First degree burns are the mildest form of burn injury affecting only the first layer, or epidermis, of the skin. They are sometimes referred to as superficial burns and although they don’t usually require any medical treatment, if a large area of skin is affected they can be painful and may need to be seen by a doctor.

Second Degree

Burns Second-degree burns penetrate both the first and second layers of the skin, or the epidermis and dermis. Because the damage extends beyond the top or superficial layer of skin they are considered to be more serious than a first-degree burn and can cause pigment changes to the skin. In some of the most severe cases, a skin graft may be required.

Third Degree Burns

Third degree burns cause extensive damage throughout all the layers of the skin, causing nerve damage and other complications. Surgery will be required in all cases of third-degree burns to try and avoid extensive scarring and contracture or tightening of the skin.

Fourth Degree Burns

Fourth degree burns are so severe that they also affect the muscles, tendons or bones resulting in life-changing injuries.
