When it comes to your health and safety at work your employer is bound by the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, which is clear about the legal requirements they must fulfil including provision of:
- A safe working environment including safe equipment and machinery.
- Protective clothing such as hard hats and boots.
- Thorough and regular risk assessments.
- Adequate training.
Ladders are a key part of your work equipment and it is your employer’s responsibility to ensure that they are safe to use and fit for purpose. As with any other piece of equipment they should be regularly checker for damage and you should be correctly trained to avoid over-reaching, incorrect-placement and problems with the locking system.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations 2006 was also put in place to protect those specifically working at a height and is clear that where such work is unavoidable all necessary safety measures are put in place and adhered to. If your employer does not comply with any of the regulations and you are injured as a result then you will be able to make a claim.
